When you ask Scott Cox, owner of Eastern Montana-based custom shop, Rimrock Art & Frame, what separates his small business from the pack, his answer is easy: Cox focuses his selling model as much on the picture frame business as he does on the relationship building business.

boardTo say Rimrock Art & Frame is thriving would be an understatement. Through hard work, investment in technology, social media marketing and a strong staff, the custom framing and retail art dealer has seen double-digit growth every year, all thanks to Scott’s commitment to customer service.

“The custom framing and art business is very personal, Scott says.  “When an artist brings their artwork to us, they need to have complete confidence in us. They need to trust we’ll take good care of it.”

This personal connection with his customers has become the cornerstone of his business, a model that has proven framesuccessful since taking ownership in 2004.

As both the owner and operator of a small business,Scott and team run into roadblocks regularly, constantly uncovering the best ways to help customers meet tight deadlines, quick turnarounds and unique obstacles.

During the 2013 holiday season, Rimrock Art & Frame came to the rescue of a doubtful client when they procured imagery and materials, and then framed and installed 90 pieces of artwork within 10 business days of order.  It’s moments like this, racing the clock to fulfill last minute orders that Rimrock Art & Frame looks to FedEx Office for its shipping needs.

Valuable artwork, especially with glass, needs to be packaged properly. With heavy duty boxes specially fit for artwork, Scott and his team can be confident the artwork will withstand the rigors of shipping.

This reliance on FedEx Office not only benefits the customer, but also provides peace of mind to Scott and his team before sending high-priced artwork out to ship.

customer“FedEx Office offers a packing pledge so it there is any loss or damage during transit, and we need to file a claim, FedEx won’t deny the claim due to improper packaging, says Scott. “Which is exactly

what we need.”

The relationship between FedEx Office and Scott reflects the same business model Rimrock Art & Frame is built on. And between the long workdays and having a hand in nearly everything that goes on during the day, relying on a trusted partner to handle shipping leaves Scott to focus on other areas of his business.

“Owning [and operating] a small business is not for the faint of heart. We have to wear many hats, including accounting, sales, shipping, ordering, marketing, IT, and on and on,” Scott says.

When we asked Scott to provide his most valuable advice for fellow business owners, he had five tips of wisdom to pass along.

  1. Work hard to provide value for your customer
  2. urround yourself with great people
  3. Focus on what you do best and delegate the rest
  4. Treat people with respect and integrity
  5. Realize that you WILL make mistakes, so plan on learning from them

As Scott and team celebrate his 10-year anniversary owning Rimrock Art & Frame, you can bet these tips will continue to drive double-digit growth for years to come.
